Active Refugees in the Community project (2017-2019)
Active Refugees in the Community -hanke toimi 1.12.2017-30.11.2019 välisenä aikana. Hankekumppaneina toimivat Pirkanmaan Martat ry, Pirkanmaa Muotoilu- ja Taideteollisuusyhdistys Modus sekä ruotsalainen ISSS Resilience Centre. Hankkeessa järjestettiin yhteensä 86 tapahtumaa, joista 59 oli kaikille avoimia tilaisuuksia. Tapahtumiin osallistui yhteensä 941 henkilöä, joista 506 oli maahanmuuttajataustaisia. Lapsia oli tapahtumissa mukana 142.
Hankkeessa suunniteltiin ja rakennettiin Tampereen Hiedanrantaan 8 kasvihuonetta kierrätysmateriaaleista vastaamaan kaupunkiviljelijöiden ja kaupunkikehityksen tarpeita. Lisäksi kehitettiin yhteisöllisen puutarhatoiminnan malli Hiedanranta Edible Garden Operating Model yhteistyössä paikallisten viranomaisten, yhdistysten ja hankkeiden kanssa, ja pilotoitiin Ruotsissa ”Seed 2 Pot 2 People” -konsepti. Kotoutujat olivat hankkeessa yhtenä tärkeimmistä kohderyhmistä. Heille luotiin puutarhasanastosta sähköinen suomen kielen oppimismateriaali, johon kuului 11 opetusvideota ja sähköinen sanakoe. Lisäksi luotiin kaupunkiviljelijätodistus Urban Farmer Certificate, jonka saavutti osallistumalla 20 kertaa puutarhaopetukseen. Ruotsissa syntyi paikallinen kieliohjelma vastaamaan paikallisten maahanmuuttajien tarpeita sekä perustettiin maahanmuuttajien hallinnoima internet-radioasema. 2 pakolaistaustaista maahanmuuttajaa työllistyi hankkeen toiminnan kautta.
Hankkeen toiminnasta kuvattiin dokumenttielokuva ”Pistokkaat” (Pirkanmaan Elokuvakeskus) sekä kirjoitettiin opinnäytetyö Greetings from the ARC -Creating a Community Garden in Urban Environment, kirjoittajana sosiaalialan opiskelija Emma Piirinen Tampereen ammattikorkeakoulusta. Lisäksi ARC-hankkeessa on ollut mukana Tampereen yliopiston ”Arjen vuorovaikutusta muotoilemassa” -tutkimusprojekti, Co-designing social interactions in everyday life. Projektissa tutkitaan arkielämän kielenkäyttötilanteita ja niissä syntyviä kielen oppimisen hetkiä. Tavoitteena on ymmärtää paremmin luokkahuoneiden ulkopuolella tapahtuvaa kielenoppimista ja kehittää sen pohjalta pedagogisia käytänteitä aikuisia suomen kielen oppijoita ja kielikoulutusta varten. Hankkeen aineistosta on tekeillä myös väitöskirja, jossa FM Anna-Kaisa Jokipohja tutkii ARC-hankkeeseen osallistuvien maahanmuuttajien kysymysten muotoilua ja kysymisen taidon kehittymistä viljelyyn ja kokkaukseen liittyvissä vuorovaikutustilanteissa.
Hankkeessa luotiin uusi yhteistyöverkosto paikallisten yhdistysten, hankkeiden ja viranomaisten kanssa tiedon vaihtoa ja palvelujen ohjaamista varten. Lisäksi suunniteltiin aloitteen tekemistä Tampereen kaupungin viljelypalsta-alueiden perusparannuksista ja kirjoitettiin suositusraportti Recommendation report ARC paikallisille viranomaisille ja yhdistystoimijoille. Suositusraportissa kirjattiin kustannustehokkaita toimintamalleja pakolaistaustaisten maahanmuuttajien aktivoimiseksi.

Active Refugees in the Community (ARC) project operated during the 1st of December 2017 until the 30th of November 2019. As a result of the ARC project, the wellbeing, acceptance, societal knowledge, handcraft, language and job creation skills of participating immigrants with refugee background have improved. Altogether 506 immigrants with refugee background were directly influenced by the project. Also, 435 local people, 225 representatives of local public sector and 122 NGOs and other interested groups in Finland and Sweden have improved their understanding on refugees, their background, challenges and personal assets via participating in project activities and events, via social media and the final seminar. During the project life time, ARC project piloted cost efficient methods to combine building, urban farming, green care, cultural activities and community building for the integration of Finnish and Swedish immigrants. The piloted methods and practices were disseminated to local public authorities, NGOs and other stakeholders working with immigrants. The developed concepts and methods are transferable and can be used also in other regions and countries, especially in Northern Europe. Also, a Hiedanranta Edible Garden Operating Model was developed in cooperation with local public authorities and associations and new e-learning materials were created for the immigrants: video tutorials and online vocabulary test in Finnish language. In addition, an Urban Farmer Certificate was created.
During the project, a thesis called Greetings from the ARC -Creating a Community Garden in Urban Environment was written by Ms Emma Piirinen, a Master Student of Social Sciences. The study was qualitative in nature, where urban gardening is described as a phenomenon through the experiences of participants in the ARC project. The aim was to ascertain what urban gardening is and the bigger picture it sets in. However, from the grassroots level, describing individual-level experiences.
